AeroVironment Unveils LOCUST X3 Counter-Drone System
March 24, 2026
AeroVironment has introduced the LOCUST X3, its latest third-generation laser-based counter-small unmanned aerial systems (C-sUAS) platform designed to neutralize small- to medium-sized drones. Featuring a 20-30 kW laser and AI-enabled automation, the LOCUST X3 addresses logistical limitations of traditional interceptors by providing virtually unlimited firing capability as long as power is available. Full system testing is planned to begin soon, reflecting AeroVironment's response to operational feedback from soldiers using earlier LOCUST versions.
- Why this matters: The LOCUST X3 represents a significant advancement in directed-energy counter-drone technology, offering procurement professionals a scalable and sustainable solution for C-sUAS defense.
- Agencies and contractors involved in defense and security should evaluate the LOCUST X3βs capabilities for integration into existing force protection and air defense systems.
- The AI-enabled automation and laser power improvements indicate growing demand for advanced technology vendors specializing in directed-energy weapons and autonomous systems.
- Organizations should consider the implications for future procurement cycles focused on counter-drone capabilities, especially in states like Alabama and Virginia where defense testing and deployments are active.
The earlier versions of LOCUST were developed and fielded, and we put them in the hands of soldiers, we got a lot of feedback from them on improvements that theyβd like, different enhancements, and we took all that feedback and X3 is the result of that.
