NASA Launches Lunar Base and Mars Mission Procurement
March 24, 2026
NASA has announced a major procurement initiative to develop a sustainable lunar base under the Artemis program, committing $20 billion over the next seven years to phased construction and infrastructure development on the Moon starting in 2027. This effort includes Requests for Information (RFIs) and draft Requests for Proposals (RFPs) targeting commercial and international partners for lunar surface payloads and infrastructure. Concurrently, NASA plans to develop and launch the Space Reactor-1 Freedom nuclear electric propulsion spacecraft to Mars by the end of 2028, marking a significant advancement in nuclear propulsion technology for deep space exploration.
- Why this matters: Procurement professionals should prepare for substantial contracting opportunities in lunar base construction, infrastructure, and payload delivery, as well as spacecraft development for Mars missions.
- NASA’s phased, capability-driven approach emphasizes incremental lunar landings and collaboration with commercial and international partners, indicating diverse vendor engagement.
- The reallocation of funds from the canceled Gateway program suggests shifting priorities and potential changes in contract scopes and requirements.
- Industry stakeholders should evaluate capabilities in space habitat construction, nuclear propulsion systems, and interplanetary spacecraft design to align with NASA’s expanding human space exploration agenda.
NASA plans to invest $20 billion over the next seven years to develop a base on the surface of the moon, the latest major strategy shakeup aimed at enabling humans to live on the lunar surface long-term.
— Jared Isaacman, NASA Administrator
Today we are aligning Nasa around the mission. On the Moon, we are shifting to a focused, phased architecture that builds capability landing by landing, incrementally, and in alignment with our industrial and international partners.
