Lockheed Martin Partners with WZL-1 to Sustain Poland's Apache Fleet
March 23, 2026
Lockheed Martin has partnered with Poland's WZL-1 to establish a Special Repair Activity facility in Łódź to support sustainment of the Polish Armed Forces' AH-64E Apache attack helicopter fleet. This collaboration follows Poland's 2024 contract to acquire 96 Apache helicopters and aims to localize maintenance capabilities, reduce repair turnaround times, and enhance operational readiness. The initiative supports Poland's defense industrial base and NATO interoperability by enabling in-country sustainment and maintenance services.
- Why this matters: Establishing local sustainment capabilities in Poland reduces dependency on external maintenance, accelerates repair cycles, and strengthens national defense readiness.
- The partnership between Lockheed Martin (prime contractor) and WZL-1 (partner/subcontractor) creates opportunities for Polish defense industry participation and workforce development.
- Procurement professionals should note the strategic importance of industrial service centers in supporting large-scale defense platform sustainment contracts.
- Contractors can explore subcontracting or support roles in localized maintenance and repair activities aligned with NATO interoperability standards.
The conclusion of our executive offset agreements, enabling the implementation and execution of the transaction for Poland’s acquisition of 96 AH-64E combat helicopters, will allow for the establishment of an Industrial Service Center for Apache Helicopters in Poland... These capabilities will ensure the maintenance of a high level of operational availability of Apache helicopters in the Polish Armed Forces, which will translate into the security of our state.
