Space Force Establishes Cyber Squadrons at Launch Bases
March 24, 2026
The U.S. Space Force's Space Systems Command has established two new Defensive Cyber Operations Squadrons to enhance cybersecurity protections for critical space launch infrastructure. These units, the 630 Cyberspace Squadron at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California and the 645 Cyberspace Squadron at Patrick Space Force Base in Florida, are tasked with defending launch ranges and associated ground terminals against increasing cyber threats such as satellite hijacking and malware attacks. This development reflects the growing importance of cybersecurity in space operations and national security, emphasizing the need for specialized cyber defense capabilities at key launch facilities.
- These squadrons represent a strategic investment in protecting national security space assets from cyber intrusions and unauthorized access during launch operations.
- Procurement professionals should anticipate increased demand for cybersecurity solutions, services, and technologies tailored to space launch infrastructure.
- Contractors with expertise in defensive cyber operations, satellite security, and critical infrastructure protection may find new opportunities supporting these squadrons and related Space Force missions.
- This initiative underscores the priority placed on cyber resilience in space systems, signaling potential future procurements focused on advanced cyber defense capabilities at other space-related facilities.
