House Homeland Security Requests GAO Review of AI Threats
March 25, 2026
The House Homeland Security Committee's Subcommittee on Counterterrorism and Intelligence, led by Rep. August Pfluger, has formally requested the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to conduct a comprehensive review of the national security risks posed by AI-enabled terrorism and extremist activities. This review will assess how malicious actors weaponize AI technologies, including generative and agentic AI, to amplify terrorist propaganda and conduct cyber threats. The GAO has accepted the request and will initiate the investigation following its current workload, reflecting growing congressional focus on AI's impact on homeland security and federal counterterrorism efforts.
- Why this matters: Procurement professionals should anticipate increased federal demand for AI threat assessment tools, cybersecurity solutions, and technology partnerships aimed at countering AI-enabled extremist threats.
- Agencies such as DHS and related contractors may see expanded requirements for AI monitoring, threat detection, and response capabilities.
- This initiative signals potential future funding and contract opportunities for vendors specializing in AI security, counterterrorism technologies, and interagency collaboration platforms.
- Organizations should evaluate their capabilities in AI risk mitigation and consider aligning with federal priorities to support evolving homeland security procurement needs.
Violent extremists and other illicit actors 6 including but not limited to insiders who pose threats and malicious cyber actors 6 will inevitably seek inventive ways to exploit these emerging technologies to support a wide range of terrorist tactics and other criminal activities.
