U.S. Army Awards AeroVironment Drone Contracts
March 24, 2026
The U.S. Army awarded AeroVironment contracts totaling approximately $135 million in March 2026 for advanced unmanned aircraft systems, including the P550 Long Range Reconnaissance drones and the new Red Dragon long-range, one-way attack drones. These awards were made through streamlined acquisition mechanisms such as the UAS Marketplace Basic Ordering Agreement, enabling rapid procurement and deployment to enhance situational awareness and lethal capabilities at the battalion level. Deliveries for the P550 systems are expected by July 23, 2026, while Red Dragon systems and associated support are scheduled for completion by April 8, 2026. Despite AeroVironment's recent lowered 2026 revenue outlook due to challenges in its Space segment, these contracts reinforce its strategic position in the Army's drone modernization efforts under the Department of Defense's "Drone Dominance" initiative.
- Why this matters: Procurement professionals should note the use of the UAS Marketplace to accelerate acquisition timelines from months or years to days, reflecting a shift toward agile contracting for unmanned systems.
- The contracts cover not only hardware but also training, field service support, and ancillary equipment, indicating comprehensive lifecycle support requirements.
- Contractors and suppliers should evaluate opportunities in autonomous UAS technologies, especially those capable of GPS-denied operations and autonomous mission execution.
- Organizations involved in tactical drone production and support services may find increased demand aligned with the Army's focus on enhancing reconnaissance and strike capabilities at lower echelons.
This award is a testament to the Army’s commitment to rapid and agile acquisition. The UAS Marketplace reduces traditional, lengthy procurement timelines to a few days. This allows us to get the most advanced capabilities into the hands of our Soldiers at the speed of relevance, ensuring they are equipped to meet current and future challenges.
— Col. Danielle Medaglia, Project Manager for Uncrewed Aircraft Systems
The previous $13 million P550 contract "opened the door for additional orders," and AeroVironment is pushing production higher.
— Wahid Nawabi, CEO
Red Dragon is a “fully autonomous capable” UAS that can perform “autonomous execution of mission objectives without reliance on continuous operator input or satellite navigation.”
