USAF Seeks Counter-Drone Technologies
March 24, 2026
The U.S. Air Force's Point Defense Battle Lab (PDBL) has issued two Requests for Information (RFIs) soliciting industry input on advanced counter-small unmanned aerial systems (C-sUAS) technologies to enhance base defense capabilities. One RFI targets rapidly deployable kinetic hard-kill systems capable of neutralizing small drones using weapons such as APKWS, 30mm guns, automated weapon stations, drone interceptors, high-energy lasers, and high-power microwaves. The second RFI focuses on detection and tracking systems for small UAS threats, particularly Group 1 drones with ranges up to 2 km and Groups 2 and 3 at shorter distances. These efforts respond to recent drone swarm activity near U.S. Air Force bases, highlighting vulnerabilities in homeland air defense and the urgent need to strengthen C-sUAS capabilities. Submissions for both RFIs are due by April 30, 2026.
- Why this matters: Procurement professionals should note the USAF's emphasis on rapid deployment and multi-technology approaches to counter drone threats, signaling opportunities for vendors specializing in kinetic and sensor technologies.
- The focus on both hard-kill and detection/tracking systems indicates a comprehensive defense strategy requiring integrated solutions.
- Contractors with expertise in directed energy weapons, automated weapon stations, and drone interception technologies can position themselves for upcoming solicitations.
- The April 30, 2026 deadline provides a clear timeline for industry engagement and proposal preparation.
The USAF established the PDBL to serve as a hub for collaboration, pushing boundaries in C-sUAS capabilities, ensuring the Air Force maintains tactical superiority against evolving threats, and as a key part of the service27s effort to develop and evaluate advanced technologies to defend installations from sUAS threats.
