NATO and Moldova Enhance Security Cooperation
March 20, 2026
NATO Military Committee Chair Giuseppe Cavo Dragone visited Chișinău in early 2026 to engage with Moldovan leadership, including Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu and President Maia Sandu, focusing on advancing Moldova's defense reforms, security sector modernization, and resilience against hybrid and cybersecurity threats. Discussions emphasized continuing collaboration under the Individual Partnership Action Plan (2025–2028) and the Defence Capacity Building Package, which are critical for modernizing Moldova's National Army and enhancing regional security amid ongoing challenges in Eastern Europe.
- Moldova's government is prioritizing modernization of defense capabilities and cybersecurity, creating potential procurement opportunities aligned with NATO standards and partnership initiatives.
- Procurement professionals should note the emphasis on military training, human resources management, strategic communication, and cyber defense as key areas for capability development.
- International vendors and contractors with expertise in defense capacity building, cyber resilience, and hybrid threat mitigation may find emerging opportunities through NATO-supported projects in Moldova.
- The partnership respects Moldova's constitutional neutrality, indicating procurement efforts will focus on defensive and resilience-enhancing capabilities rather than offensive systems.
The officials agreed to continue the implementation of projects under the Individual Partnership Action Plan for the period 2025–2028 and of initiatives from the Defence Capacity Building Package, considered essential for modernizing the National Army.
