Toledo Public Schools Procures Electric Buses
March 19, 2026
Toledo Public Schools has procured 12 new Type C electric school buses and associated charging infrastructure through a contract supported by an approximately $4.7 million grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Clean School Bus Program, awarded March 19, 2026. The district partnered with Highland Electric Fleets as the prime contractor and IC Bus as the manufacturer to modernize its transportation fleet, aiming to reduce operational costs, improve student health by lowering emissions, and integrate workforce development via technical education programs focused on electric vehicle maintenance.
- This procurement highlights growing federal support for clean transportation in public education, signaling increased opportunities for vendors specializing in electric vehicle fleets and charging solutions.
- Procurement professionals should note the integration of educational components tied to fleet modernization, which may influence future contract requirements emphasizing workforce training.
- The partnership model between a school district and specialized electric fleet providers demonstrates a replicable approach for other districts seeking to leverage EPA grants for sustainable transportation.
- Companies in electric vehicle manufacturing, charging infrastructure, and technical education services can leverage this trend to position for upcoming school transportation modernization contracts.
This new partnership with Highland Electric Fleets is a tremendous opportunity for Toledo Public Schools. Not only will some of our routes be serviced by eco-friendly buses, but some students will have the chance to learn what it takes to keep these vehicles operating at peak efficiency through a specialized training program.

Electric school buses deliver measurable health and financial benefits from day one. Replacing five diesel school buses with electric models can reduce the risk of pediatric asthma for approximately 1,500 students.
