U.S. Military Accepts F-35s Without Radars
March 19, 2026
The U.S. Department of Defense will begin accepting new F-35 Joint Strike Fighters without the APG-85 radars starting in fall 2026 due to ongoing delays in radar development and certification. These radar-less aircraft, produced under recent Lots 18-19 contracts finalized through late 2025, will be airworthy but restricted to training roles until the radar systems are installed and certified. This interim measure affects over 100 aircraft and has implications for combat readiness and operational planning across the U.S. Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps.
- The F-35 Joint Program Office (JPO) and prime contractor Lockheed Martin are managing production under contracts awarded as recently as December 2024 for 145 jets, including 83 for U.S. military services.
- Radar manufacturer Northrop Grumman faces certification challenges that limit accelerated deployment of the APG-85 radar, impacting the aircraft's full combat capabilities.
- Procurement professionals should anticipate adjustments in delivery schedules, acceptance criteria, and potential contract modifications related to radar installation timelines.
- Contractors and suppliers involved in radar production and integration may find opportunities to support accelerated testing, certification, and retrofit efforts to restore full operational capability.
F-35s have performed really well in the Middle East and in Venezuela, wherever theyβve been deployed against lesser adversaries. But when it comes to countries like China that have built truly integrated air and missile defenses... they need to continue to advance the capabilities that were initially put into the F-35 to remain relevant against adversaries that are advancing more quickly than we are.

With the new radar, thereβs only so much that you can do to compress the time frame, just because of the rigor necessary in certifying a new radar system, a radar system thatβs much more capable, which the aircraft needs.
