Hawaii Funds Pololū Trailhead Improvements
March 19, 2026
The Hawaii State House has allocated $1 million in the 2026 draft state budget (HB1800 HD1) to support capital improvements at the Pololū Trailhead and Historic Trail in Hawaii. This funding targets planning, design, and infrastructure upgrades aimed at enhancing safety, accessibility, and cultural preservation. The bill is currently under consideration by the Hawaii State Senate, with local leaders emphasizing the importance of maintaining this appropriation to address visitor impact and environmental concerns.
- The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) will lead project execution, focusing on parking expansion, restroom facilities, interpretive signage, and safe pedestrian access.
- Procurement professionals should anticipate contracting opportunities related to civil engineering, environmental planning, and cultural resource management services.
- Contractors with expertise in trail infrastructure, public safety enhancements, and culturally sensitive design are positioned to benefit from upcoming solicitations.
- This initiative reflects growing state-level investment in sustainable outdoor recreation infrastructure, signaling potential for similar projects in Hawaii and other regions.
The number of visitors at the Pololū Valley lookout overwhelms the available parking space causing serious traffic & pedestrian safety concerns. The lack of bathroom facilities results in unsanitary conditions and environmental degradation. This funding will allow the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) to improve the parcel to accommodate parking, build and install interpretive panels, and provide bathrooms and safe pedestrian access to the trailhead. These are much-needed improvements!
