Oklahoma Senate Strengthens Sexual Assault Evidence Processing
March 24, 2026
The Oklahoma Senate has passed multiple bills aimed at enhancing the processing and reporting of sexual assault cases, including Senate Bill 1584 which mandates expedited timelines for submission and testing of sexual assault evidence kits. Law enforcement agencies are now required to submit kits within 10 days, and the state crime lab must complete testing within 30 days. Additional legislation strengthens reporting and notification protocols for sexual assault incidents in schools, improving accountability and investigative procedures.
- These legislative changes will likely increase demand for forensic testing services and related procurement by the Oklahoma State Crime Lab and law enforcement agencies.
- Procurement professionals should anticipate requirements for faster turnaround times and potentially expanded forensic laboratory capacity or services.
- Vendors specializing in forensic evidence processing and sexual assault kit testing may find new opportunities to support state agencies under these mandates.
- Agencies involved in law enforcement and school safety will need to update operational protocols and may require new contracts for training, reporting systems, or investigative support tools.
Protecting our children and properly investigating allegations of sexual misconduct must always be a top priority. School administrators do a great job managing schools, but they are not investigators. Law enforcement officials follow a specific protocol and chain of command during investigative process to ensure evidence isnt mishandled and any allegations can be proven in a court of law. This will provide better accountability when these situations arise.
— Senator Kristen Thompson
Oklahoma has made important progress addressing untested evidence kits, but we still need a clear system that ensures new kits are processed quickly and consistently.
