Army Assumes Control of THAAD Program
March 19, 2026
The U.S. Army is scheduled to take full control of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile defense program from the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) by fiscal year 2027. This transition consolidates program management under the Army, which currently operates the system, aiming to streamline oversight and potentially improve production and operational prioritization. The THAAD system remains a critical component of U.S. missile defense capabilities, with recent operational deployments in the Middle East and ongoing concerns about munitions stockpile sustainability amid evolving strategic demands.
- The Army's assumption of THAAD program management signals a shift in procurement and acquisition responsibilities within the Department of Defense, affecting contract oversight and program execution.
- Lockheed Martin, as the prime contractor, may experience changes in contract management interfaces and requirements as the Army takes direct control.
- Procurement professionals should anticipate adjustments in acquisition strategies, reporting, and coordination with Army program offices, particularly under the leadership of Lt. Gen. Frank Lozano.
- The transition may influence future contract solicitations, sustainment planning, and production schedules, especially considering operational demands in regions like the Middle East and South Korea.
The current THAAD office will be transferring over to me from MDA in fiscal year 27.
— Lt. Gen. Frank Lozano
As concerning as that is, the expenditure of long-range weapons should also give us pause.
