U.S. Navy Awards $15.4B Columbia-Class Submarine Contract
March 24, 2026
The U.S. Navy awarded General Dynamics Electric Boat a $15.4 billion contract modification in March 2026 to advance the design, construction, and industrial base development of the Columbia-class ballistic missile submarine program, including support for the USS Groton (SSBN 828) and future Columbia-class submarines. This contract extends through 2035 and also supports serial production of Virginia-class submarines, aiming to resolve supply chain challenges and sustain employment in key shipbuilding locations such as Groton, Connecticut, and Newport News, Virginia. Congressional leaders emphasize the contract's critical role in maintaining the submarine industrial base and national defense capabilities.
- Why this matters: This significant contract modification ensures long-term stability and growth for the submarine industrial base, providing procurement professionals and contractors with sustained opportunities in design, manufacturing, and supply chain development through 2035.
- The contract supports advanced construction and procurement of long-lead items, highlighting the importance of early supplier engagement and industrial base readiness.
- Organizations involved in naval shipbuilding, component manufacturing, and supply chain logistics should evaluate their capacity to support serial production demands and potential subcontracting opportunities.
- The contract underscores continued Department of Defense investment in strategic undersea deterrence platforms, signaling priority areas for future defense procurement planning.
This contract will support Electric Boatβs advanced construction and procurement of long-lead items for the third Columbia-class submarine, the USS Groton (SSBN 828), as well as development and engineering work for future Columbia submarines as the lead shipyard for the Columbia-class.
— Joe Courtney
This $15.38 billion is a boon for both our national defense and our stateβs economy. Todayβs announcement is huge news for the talented workers at Electric Boat and its supply chain companies who produce the worldβs best submarines β ensuring our military has the best tools and technology to succeed. I am thrilled to see their hard work and expert engineering recognized yet again by the Department of Defense, and will keep advocating for strong contracts for Connecticut defense manufacturers.
