Congress Establishes Medal of Sacrifice Commission
January 27, 2026
Congress enacted the Medal of Sacrifice Act of 2025, authorizing the President to award a Medal of Sacrifice to law enforcement officers and first responders killed in the line of duty. The Act establishes a federal Commission responsible for overseeing eligibility criteria, medal design, and presentation protocols. While no direct procurement contracts have been announced, the creation of this Commission and the medal program may lead to future procurement opportunities related to medal manufacturing, design services, and administrative support.
- The Commission will govern eligibility, including exclusions for officers with official findings of wrongdoing unless exceptions are granted.
- Tiffany & Co. is involved as the designer incorporating Great Seal features into the medal, indicating potential vendor engagement for medal production.
- Procurement professionals should anticipate upcoming solicitations for medal manufacturing and related services as the program is implemented.
- Agencies and contractors specializing in awards, insignia production, and federal program support may find new business opportunities linked to this initiative.
A local, State, Tribal, territorial, or Federal law enforcement officer or first responder who is killed in the line of duty, but who is subject to an official finding of wrongdoing, shall not be eligible for the medal of sacrifice unless the Commission determines otherwise.
