Gwangju Agency Supports Unmanned System Startup
March 18, 2026
Unmanned System, a South Korean startup founded in 2021, has been selected for the 2025 Leap Package by the Gwangju Information & Content Agency to develop its Multipurpose Hybrid Re-entry Unmanned System (HyRUS). This hybrid rocket-UAV platform targets stratospheric missions up to 60 km altitude, aiming to advance atmospheric data collection and reusable launch vehicle technologies. The project is supported by government R&D initiatives, reflecting a strategic investment in high-altitude unmanned systems with potential applications in scientific observation and aerospace innovation.
- Why this matters: This selection highlights growing government support for advanced unmanned aerospace technologies, signaling procurement opportunities in hybrid rocket and UAV platforms.
- Procurement professionals should note the emphasis on stratospheric mission capabilities, which may influence future contract requirements and technology standards.
- Industry stakeholders can explore partnerships or technology development aligned with reusable launch vehicle and high-altitude observation systems.
- The initiative underscores South Korea's commitment to fostering aerospace startups through targeted funding and R&D support, potentially expanding the market for innovative aerospace solutions.
In the short term, our goal is to secure flight demonstrations and data reliability for the 30 km-class hybrid re-entry unmanned system. In the medium to long term, we aim to expand into markets for stratospheric observation, high-altitude experimental platforms, and reusable launch vehicle-based unmanned missions.
