ESA and UK Space Agency Fund Space Tech Commercialisation
March 20, 2026
The European Space Agency (ESA) and UK Space Agency have launched significant initiatives in 2026 to accelerate the development and industrialisation of space technologies in Europe and the UK. ESA's General Support Technology Programme (GSTP) is providing up to £14.7 million in funding to UK businesses, particularly SMEs, to commercialise advanced space technologies. Concurrently, ESA has issued a Request for Information (RFI) for the Mid-size LEO satellite INDustrialisation (M-IND) initiative aimed at scaling up production capacity and reducing costs and lead times for midsize Low Earth Orbit satellites to meet growing market demand.
- Why this matters: Procurement professionals should note the availability of substantial funding and industrialisation efforts targeting midsize LEO satellite production and space technology commercialisation, presenting opportunities for UK and European space technology suppliers.
- The focus on SMEs indicates a strategic push to foster innovation and competitiveness within smaller companies in the space sector.
- Organizations involved in satellite manufacturing, space technology development, and related supply chains should evaluate participation in ESA's GSTP funding and respond to the M-IND RFI to align with Europe's industrial sovereignty goals.
- These initiatives signal increased procurement activity and collaboration opportunities within the European and UK space technology markets, emphasizing cost reduction and production scalability.
