Merlin Labs Advances Autonomous Flight Contracts
March 18, 2026
Merlin Labs, a Boston-based aerospace and defense technology company specializing in AI-powered autonomous flight systems, has completed its merger with Inflection Point Acquisition Corp. IV and is now publicly traded on Nasdaq under the ticker MRLN. The transaction raised approximately $200 million, valuing Merlin at $800 million pre-money, enabling significant R&D investment in 2026 to advance its Merlin Pilot AI tool capable of autonomously flying any aircraft. Merlin holds contracts with the U.S. Air Force and Missile Defense Agency, including a $16 million Air Force contract to apply its autonomous pilot technology to C-130J aircrew workload management and ongoing work on the C-130J autonomy program's design phases. Additionally, Merlin is involved in the Spot on SHIELD contract vehicle supporting missile defense system development.
- Why this matters: Merlin's public offering and capital infusion position it to accelerate autonomous flight technology development, directly impacting defense aviation modernization efforts.
- Procurement professionals should note Merlin's expanding role as a prime contractor for AI-enabled aviation systems with key federal agencies such as the Air Force and Missile Defense Agency.
- Contractors and industry stakeholders can anticipate increased demand for AI-driven autonomy solutions in military aircraft, highlighting opportunities in software integration, system design, and operational support.
- Organizations should evaluate partnerships or subcontracting with Merlin to leverage advancements in autonomous flight capabilities relevant to defense aviation missions.
At Merlin, we are rethinking what flight can be. Aviation up to now was defined by the humans who fly aircraft 92 and so aviation design, engineering, and operations reflected a human focus. Merlin was founded on the insight that, when you challenge that core human-centricity and all its related assumptions, the nature and possibilities of aviation change.
