SBA Establishes Whistleblower Awards Office
February 20, 2026
The Small Business Administration (SBA) has established an Office of Whistleblower Awards under the Put America on Commission Act of 2026 (H.R. 7412) to incentivize reporting of fraud related to SBA's COVID-19 lending programs, including the Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) and Paycheck Protection Program (PPP). This office will provide monetary awards to whistleblowers whose information leads to convictions or settlements, funded through civil penalties assessed on fraudsters. This initiative aims to strengthen fraud detection and recovery efforts tied to the approximately $1.2 trillion in COVID-19 relief loans disbursed during 2020-2021.
- Why this matters: Procurement professionals and contractors involved with SBA programs should be aware of increased scrutiny and enforcement mechanisms targeting fraud in COVID-19 relief lending.
- The establishment of a whistleblower awards office signals enhanced government focus on accountability and recovery of misused funds.
- Organizations should evaluate internal compliance and fraud prevention measures to mitigate risks associated with SBA COVID-19 loan programs.
- Industry stakeholders may find opportunities to support fraud detection, investigation, and recovery efforts aligned with SBA and oversight bodies such as the Office of Inspector General and Pandemic Response Accountability Committee.
