Tennessee Army National Guard Demonstrates Expeditionary Manufacturing
March 16, 2026
The Tennessee Army National Guard, in partnership with the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and the DEVCOM Army Research Laboratory, successfully restored a deadlined MRAP vehicle in under 10 hours using SPEE3D's Cold Spray Expeditionary Manufacturing Unit. This demonstration of expeditionary manufacturing drastically reduces traditional multi-week logistics delays to hours, enabling rapid, point-of-need production of critical vehicle parts in contested or remote environments. This capability enhances operational readiness, reduces downtime, and improves soldier safety by allowing units to perform essential repairs on-site without waiting for supply chain deliveries.
- Why this matters: Procurement professionals should note the emerging demand for expeditionary manufacturing technologies that support rapid field repairs and logistics agility.
- The collaboration highlights opportunities for vendors providing advanced manufacturing solutions tailored to military and National Guard applications.
- Agencies may consider integrating such technologies into future vehicle maintenance contracts to improve readiness and reduce operational risk.
- Contractors should evaluate how to support training and deployment of expeditionary manufacturing units to maximize their impact in operational settings.
If we can give our soldiers the ability to build critical repair parts in a timely manner, that will help improve combat power, enhance readiness, and reduce risk... that could ultimately help save soldiersβ lives.
— Army Lt. Col. Colby Tippens, Executive Officer, 278th ACR, TNARNG
During this trial, I was introduced to technology that I didnβt even know was out there and available to us. I had a very short amount of time and training with this, but even with that, I feel like I could take this back to my unit and train my soldiers to print our own parts right there on the fly. I think it would just be a game changer for us.
