Collier County Advances Rail Trail Land Purchases
March 15, 2026
Collier County Commission approved allocating over $11.6 million from the Conservation Collier fund to purchase approximately 1.5 miles of railway land from Seminole Gulf Railway for the Bonita-Estero Rail Trail (BERT) project on March 10, 2026. This multi-county recreational trail initiative also involves neighboring Lee County municipalities, with the Village of Estero recently acquiring 4.1 miles of rail line for nearly $19.8 million and the City of Bonita Springs planning to purchase 5.8 miles valued at $28.6 million. The Trust for Public Land is acting as a nonprofit broker facilitating these land acquisitions. The project aims to convert former rail corridors into public recreational trails, leveraging conservation funds to support community connectivity and outdoor recreation.
- Why this matters: Procurement professionals should note the use of conservation funds for land acquisition in multi-jurisdictional infrastructure projects, highlighting opportunities for land brokers and environmental consultants.
- The involvement of multiple local governments indicates coordinated procurement and funding strategies across county lines.
- Vendors specializing in land transactions, environmental assessments, and trail construction may find emerging contract opportunities as the project progresses.
- Organizations should consider the implications of conservation fund allocations on procurement planning and community engagement in similar infrastructure initiatives.
It is a momentous point, where we are today. This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity that will change all three of these communities for many generations to come.
— Doug Hattaway, Trust for Public Land
I met with 250 people at a mobile home park right there in North Collier. When I told them that we were going to use Conservation Collier funds to try to attain this trail and not use their general tax money, they applauded.
