Tamil Nadu Requests Rice Procurement Target Increase
March 14, 2026
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin has formally requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the central government to double the state's rice procurement target for the kharif season from 16 lakh tonnes to 32 lakh tonnes. This request is based on increased paddy yields and ongoing procurement rates that have already exceeded the current cap. The state projects total paddy procurement to reach 47.50 lakh tonnes, equivalent to 32 lakh tonnes of rice, and urges the central government to revise procurement targets promptly to ensure uninterrupted procurement operations and timely payments to farmers.
- Why this matters: Procurement professionals should anticipate an expanded rice procurement volume in Tamil Nadu, which may require adjustments in supply chain logistics, storage capacity, and payment processing.
- The increased procurement target signals potential growth in demand for procurement services and infrastructure support within the state's agricultural supply chain.
- Vendors and contractors involved in grain handling, storage, and transportation may find new opportunities arising from the expanded procurement scope.
- Timely revision of procurement targets by central agencies like the National Cooperative Consumers' Federation of India Ltd will be critical to avoid disruptions and maintain farmer confidence.
Procurement was continuing at around 50,000 tonnes a day and was projected to total 47.50 lakh tonnes, equivalent to 32 lakh tonnes of rice, Stalin said and urged the Centre to issue "priority instructions" to revise the target to avoid disruptions for farmers.
