AIIMS Conducts Remote Ultrasound in Antarctica
March 14, 2026
AIIMS doctors successfully performed the first remote ultrasound (USG) test on a patient at India's Maitri research station in Antarctica using a tele-robotic diagnostic system developed collaboratively by AIIMS, NCPOR, IIT Delhi, and startups. This milestone demonstrates the technical feasibility of delivering advanced telemedicine services in extreme and remote environments, including Antarctica, high-altitude regions, and disaster zones, by enabling real-time connectivity and specialist consultation from India.
- This initiative highlights emerging procurement opportunities for telemedicine technologies and remote diagnostic systems tailored for harsh environments.
- Agencies operating in remote or austere locations may require similar tele-robotic medical solutions to enhance emergency care capabilities.
- Vendors specializing in telehealth, robotics, and secure real-time communication systems should evaluate potential collaborations with government research and healthcare institutions.
- Procurement professionals should consider integrating such advanced telemedicine platforms into future health service contracts supporting remote government facilities and expeditions.
Healthcare delivery in Antarctica remains uniquely challenging. Expedition members operate in extreme cold, prolonged isolation, and environments with limited medical infrastructure. While trained medical officers and essential diagnostic equipment are available at stations, access to super-specialist consultation from India can be constrained by geographical distance and operational limitations.
