UK and Ireland Enhance Joint Defence Procurement
March 19, 2026
The United Kingdom and Ireland have signed a refreshed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in early 2026 to strengthen bilateral defence cooperation, with a significant focus on joint procurement initiatives. This agreement targets enhanced capabilities in maritime security, cyber defence, air domain awareness, and protection of critical subsea infrastructure, reflecting shared concerns over hybrid threats, particularly from Russian activities. The MoU respects Ireland's neutrality while enabling coordinated operational responses, including potential deployment of British naval vessels in Irish waters and joint live exercises scheduled to begin in September 2026.
- The MoU signals procurement opportunities for naval vessels, including potential joint acquisition of Type 26 anti-submarine warfare frigates and possible procurement of Type 31 multipurpose frigates to meet Irish naval requirements.
- Defence contractors such as BAE Systems, Thales, and Babcock are positioned as key suppliers or awardees in related naval and maritime systems procurements.
- Procurement professionals should note the emphasis on maritime and cyber domains, indicating increased demand for advanced naval platforms, towed array sonar systems, and cybersecurity solutions.
- The agreement's operational provisions and joint exercises may accelerate procurement timelines and foster cross-border defence industrial collaboration, impacting contract strategies and partnership opportunities.
It is appropriate that, after ten years, we take the opportunity to refresh our Memorandum of Understanding and provide for a particular focus in such areas as maritime, cyber defence, air information sharing and joint procurement initiatives.
— Helen McEntee, Irish Defence Minister
The UK and Ireland share a long history of defence cooperation from crisis management and humanitarian operations to training, military education and staff exchanges. This rebooted Memorandum of Understanding modernises our framework for cooperation on areas critical to both our nationss security, in particular to counter the growing undersea and cyber threats we share.
— John Healey, UK Defence Secretary
We know whats happened in other seas where there has been interventions, we know that certain elements have been observing the cables and other vital infrastructure, and so thats the context, and its to protect that and to make sure we can respond effectively if an event was to happen.
— MicheΓ‘l Martin, Taoiseach
