USDOT Releases $1.05B for Blatnik Bridge Replacement
March 19, 2026
The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) has released over $1.05 billion in federal INFRA grant funding to support the replacement of the John A. Blatnik Bridge, a critical infrastructure link connecting Duluth, Minnesota, and Superior, Wisconsin. This funding release, announced in March 2026, follows advocacy from multiple U.S. Senators and state officials to prevent costly delays and ensure the project proceeds on schedule. The total project cost is estimated at $1.8 billion, with additional state funding from Minnesota and Wisconsin. Construction is expected to begin in late 2026, aiming to improve regional commerce, transportation safety, and job creation in the Twin Ports area.
- Key agencies involved: USDOT, Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT), Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT)
- Why this matters: The Blatnik Bridge replacement is a major infrastructure procurement opportunity with significant federal and state investment, impacting regional supply chains and transportation safety
- Actionable insights: Contractors and suppliers specializing in large-scale bridge construction, civil engineering, and infrastructure development should evaluate upcoming solicitations and partnership opportunities
- Budget and schedule: The project is federally funded with over $1.05 billion released as of March 2026, with construction anticipated to start later this year, emphasizing the need for timely procurement planning and resource allocation
A safe and reliable Blatnik Bridge is critical for Minnesotaโs economic future and for people across our entire region. Replacing this bridge will help Minnesotans who rely on it every day to get to work or to visit friends and family. We made the case to two Administrations on why this funding is so crucial, and now this incredibly important project can move forward without further unnecessary delays and increased costs.
— Amy Klobuchar, U.S. Senator
More than 33,000 vehicles rely on the Blatnik Bridge each day, making it a vital link for workers, families, and businesses across the Twin Ports. After decades of use, replacing this bridge is critical to ensuring safe and dependable travel across the St. Louis Bay. With federal funding now secured, this project can move forward to deliver modern, reliable infrastructure that supports good-paying union jobs, strengthens supply chains, and provides safer commutes.
— Congressman Tom Tiffany
Any delay in the Blatnik Bridge replacement project wouldโve been incredibly costly to Minnesota and Wisconsin, to the tune of millions of dollars. Releasing this funding now means this project can move forward on schedule โ and Minnesota taxpayers wonโt have to pay more for the same bridge. Iโm grateful the Administration heeded our calls to release this money and Iโm looking forward to seeing construction completed on time and within budget.
— Tina Smith, U.S. Senator
