US and Zambia Launch Strategic Commercial Projects
March 19, 2026
The Governments of the United States and the Republic of Zambia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on March 30, 2023, establishing a five-year cooperation framework to promote and facilitate U.S. private sector participation in strategic commercial projects across multiple priority sectors in Zambia. These sectors include agriculture, energy, mining, healthcare, manufacturing, information technology, tourism, and education. The MOU outlines mechanisms for investment facilitation, capacity building, and sustainable infrastructure development, leveraging support from various U.S. federal agencies such as the Department of Commerce and the United States Trade and Development Agency (USTDA). This initiative aligns with Zambia's National Long-Term Vision 2030 and emphasizes adherence to domestic and international laws and anti-corruption best practices.
- Why this matters: Procurement professionals and contractors should note the expanded opportunities for U.S. private sector engagement in Zambia's strategic sectors under a structured bilateral framework.
- The involvement of multiple U.S. agencies indicates coordinated support for trade and investment facilitation, which may streamline contracting and partnership processes.
- Companies with expertise in agriculture, energy, mining, healthcare, manufacturing, IT, tourism, and education sectors can explore new project opportunities backed by government cooperation.
- Organizations should consider aligning proposals with sustainable development goals and compliance with anti-corruption standards as emphasized in the MOU.
The Governments intend to support the development of strategic agriculture, industry, transportation, energy and other priority projects in a manner fully consistent with applicable domestic and international law, as well as international best practices intended to prevent, detect, and prosecute corruption.
