DOE Launches UPRISE Nuclear Expansion
March 18, 2026
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has launched the Utility Power Reactor Incremental Scaling Effort (UPRISE) to significantly expand the nation's nuclear power capacity from 100 GW to 400 GW by 2050. This initiative targets increasing output from existing nuclear reactors, restarting dormant facilities, and completing stalled projects to add 2.5 GW of capacity by 2027 and 5 GW by 2029. The expansion aims to meet rising electricity demands driven by industrial manufacturers and AI data centers, supporting critical infrastructure growth and energy reliability.
- DOE's UPRISE initiative signals increased procurement opportunities for nuclear technology upgrades, reactor restarts, and modernization projects.
- Procurement professionals should anticipate solicitations related to nuclear plant equipment, technology modernization, and infrastructure support aligned with the 2027 and 2029 capacity milestones.
- Contractors specializing in nuclear energy systems, power generation equipment, and industrial-scale energy solutions may find new business avenues.
- This expansion reflects federal commitment to nuclear energy as a key component of the U.S. energy grid, emphasizing long-term contracts and strategic partnerships.
This will be a resurgence for Americaβs nuclear fleet.
