Federal Legislation
House Passes Chiricahua National Park Act
March 16, 2026
The U.S. House of Representatives has passed H.R. 6380, the Chiricahua National Park Act, which redesignates the Chiricahua National Monument in Arizona as Chiricahua National Park. This legislative change elevates the site's status within the National Park System without altering its boundaries or funding levels. The Act mandates the Department of the Interior to protect traditional cultural and religious sites, consult with Indian Tribes, and permits temporary closures for tribal activities. The redesignation is expected to increase visitation and tourism, potentially driving procurement activities related to park management, conservation, and infrastructure improvements in southeastern Arizona.
- The National Park Service and Department of the Interior will likely require expanded services and contracts to support increased visitor management, cultural site protection, and infrastructure maintenance.
- Procurement professionals should anticipate opportunities in environmental conservation, cultural resource management, and visitor services aligned with the park's elevated status.
- Local economic development initiatives may increase demand for contracts supporting tourism infrastructure and community engagement in Willcox and surrounding areas.
- Organizations specializing in tribal consultation and cultural site preservation may find new contracting opportunities due to mandated tribal engagement and site protections.
As the Mayor of Willcox and a small-business owner, I can tell you firsthand that redesignating the Chiricahuas as a National Park would be transformational. Tourism isnโt just helpful to our community โ itโs essential. A National Park designation would bring more visitors, support local jobs, and strengthen the entire economy of rural Arizona.
— Greg Hancock, Mayor, City of Willcox
