Senate Passes Veteran Home Loan Awareness Legislation
March 13, 2026
The U.S. Senate has passed bipartisan legislation including the VA Home Loan Awareness Act and the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, aimed at increasing veteran utilization of VA home loan benefits and improving access to affordable housing. The VA Home Loan Awareness Act mandates enhanced disclosures on loan applications and requires a Government Accountability Office (GAO) review to identify barriers and improve veteran access to homeownership programs. This legislative package also streamlines federal housing construction and rehabilitation processes, supporting broader housing affordability goals.
- Why this matters: Federal agencies involved in veteran housing and loan programs should prepare for updated disclosure requirements and potential GAO recommendations impacting procurement and program administration.
- The legislation signals increased federal focus on veteran homeownership, potentially expanding demand for housing construction, rehabilitation, and related services.
- Contractors and vendors in housing development and mortgage services may find new opportunities as agencies implement streamlined processes and enhanced outreach.
- Procurement professionals should engage with HUD and VA program offices to align upcoming solicitations and contract strategies with the new legislative mandates.
As a combat veteran who is married to a combat veteran, ensuring our nationβs warfighters have the information and resources they need to live out the American dream when they return home is among my top priorities. The VA Home Loan Awareness Act will ensure our veterans can take full advantage of programs designed to help them achieve home ownership, and Iβm proud to see it pass the Senate in a strong, bipartisan vote.
— Senator Tim Sheehy
Lowering the cost of housing is crucial to help Arkansans keep more money in their pockets and reach key personal and financial milestones. Our veterans particularly deserve that support, yet VA loans are significantly underutilized, demonstrating a clear need to go further in making them aware they qualify for assistance purchasing a home or securing greater savings throughout the life of a mortgage.
