New Jersey Expands Battery Storage Procurement
March 12, 2026
The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU) has approved significant expansions in solar and battery energy storage projects as part of the state's clean energy and energy affordability initiatives under Governor Mikie Sherrill. In March 2026, NJBPU authorized a 3GW expansion of the community solar program, approved three photovoltaic projects totaling 24.1MW under the Competitive Solar Incentive program, and sanctioned three battery energy storage system projects totaling 355MW under the Garden State Energy Storage Program. Additionally, a new 645MW battery storage procurement was announced to further support New Jersey's clean energy goals.
- Why this matters: These approvals represent substantial procurement opportunities for energy storage and solar developers, signaling strong state commitment to clean energy infrastructure expansion.
- Procurement professionals should note the scale and timing of these projects, as they indicate upcoming solicitations and contract awards in the battery storage and solar sectors.
- Companies specializing in battery energy storage systems and photovoltaic technologies can position themselves to participate in these programs, which emphasize cost-effective, in-state clean energy resources.
- The initiatives reflect New Jersey's strategic focus on balancing energy affordability with sustainability, potentially influencing procurement priorities and evaluation criteria.
Solar and battery storage are the fastest and most cost-effective ways to build new electricity generation. Todayโs actions advance Governor Sherrillโs clean energy goals while continuing the Boardโs commitment to balancing affordability and promoting clean, in-state energy resources.
