State & Local Meeting
Groton RTM Recreation Committee - 3/11/26
March 11, 2026
The Groton RTM Recreation Committee discussed expanding their existing program of smart trash barrels in local parks. They currently have about 60 barrels equipped with technology that signals when they are full, reducing the need for frequent manual checks by park staff. The committee plans to purchase additional units to be placed in high-traffic areas such as Estro Point Beach, Plains Park, the pump track near G4 Road, and Far Park. Funding for this expansion comes from a $19,000 balance of previously approved funds and revenue generated from a 10-cent tax on miniature liquor bottles, which yields approximately $45,000 every six months. The goal is to improve efficiency in waste management and reduce labor costs by optimizing trash collection routes and schedules.
