Food Inspections and Public Health
February 02, 2026
The City of Garland's environmental health department, led by Director Mandy Pippen, discussed their comprehensive efforts to protect public health through food inspections, mosquito control, pool safety, and childcare facility inspections. The department conducts annual inspections of restaurants, convenience stores, nursing homes, and other facilities, focusing on critical foodborne illness risk factors such as temperature control and employee hygiene. They have recently enhanced their food inspection scoring system to improve enforcement and transparency, with scores and inspection reports made publicly available online. Additionally, the department manages vector control by monitoring mosquito populations and contracting spraying services when necessary, as well as inspecting public and private pools and childcare centers to ensure safety compliance. The department is also adopting new technology, including Salesforce software, to improve communication and outreach. With a team of six inspectors handling various functions, the department emphasizes education, prevention, and enforcement to maintain Garland's public health standards.
