DOE Launches Genesis Mission AI Funding
March 18, 2026
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has launched the Genesis Mission, a high-profile initiative to accelerate scientific discovery through artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing. DOE is collaborating with major industry partners including Dell Technologies and Siemens Government Technologies to develop advanced AI-driven research infrastructure such as the Genesis Mission platform and the upcoming Doudna supercomputer. Concurrently, DOE announced a $293 million funding opportunity (DE-FOA-0003612) in March 2026 to support interdisciplinary teams from national labs, academia, and industry in applying AI to critical technical fields including advanced manufacturing, biotechnology, nuclear energy, and quantum information science. Additional funding opportunities totaling over $800 million support foundational science, energy research, and infrastructure modernization.
- Why this matters: Procurement professionals should note the significant federal investment in AI-enabled scientific research infrastructure and the opportunity for GovCon companies to engage in contracts supporting DOEβs AI and computing initiatives.
- The involvement of Siemens, Dell, and other industry leaders signals a collaborative ecosystem for AI innovation at DOE national laboratories, creating potential subcontracting and partnership opportunities.
- Organizations should prepare to respond to DOE solicitations focused on AI applications, high-performance computing, and energy technology modernization, aligning capabilities with DOEβs interdisciplinary research priorities.
- The 2026 FedCiv Summit on October 29 offers a key engagement platform for industry to connect with DOE representatives and explore upcoming contract opportunities related to the Genesis Mission and broader energy research programs.
The EFRCs will continue to play a vital role in bridging disciplines and institutions, advancing foundational science and strengthening Americaβs leadership to push forward scientific frontiers critical for new energy technologies.
