# FMC Hosts Washington Demurrage Symposium

The Federal Maritime Commission will hold a research symposium on demurrage and detention on March 31, 2027, at FMC Headquarters in Washington, D.C. Researchers and maritime industry experts are invited to present work on how these charges are set, the costs they are intended to compensate, behavioral incentives, and effects on cargo fluidity. Paper submissions are due February 15, 2027, and audience registration opens March 1, 2027.

- Procurement and logistics professionals can use the symposium’s focus areas to assess how demurrage and detention charges affect cargo movement, shipping costs, and supply-chain planning.
- Maritime industry experts and researchers interested in presenting should submit papers by February 15, 2027; prospective attendees can register beginning March 1.
- The event offers an opportunity to share evidence on charge-setting methods and operational impacts with the FMC and maritime stakeholders. Paper-submission and symposium questions can be directed to WWang@fmc.gov; general symposium questions can also be directed to MReilly@fmc.gov.
