# 10/29/26 Building Code Board of Appeals

The Lawrence Building Code Board of Appeals met on October 29, 2026, to continue reviewing proposed amendments to the 2024 International Fire Code. The board approved the prior meeting’s minutes and discussed carryover and proposed provisions, including congregate-living occupancy definitions, fire protection in residential occupancies, open burning, fire access, and cooking-hood requirements. No contracts, purchases, or budget allocations were considered. In discussing sprinkler-system monitoring, members heard estimates of roughly $3,000–$4,000 for installation and $40–$50 per month for monitoring; these were informational estimates, not approved spending.

The board unanimously passed a motion directing staff to amend the fire code to require monitoring when a 13D sprinkler system is selected instead of a 13R system for Group R-4, Condition 1. Staff will refine the amendment language. Other code provisions remain under review, with further discussion planned for a subsequent meeting; the board did not vote to adopt the full 2024 IFC amendments at this meeting.
