# U.S.–Zambia Promote Commercial Projects

The United States and Zambia signed a nonbinding memorandum of understanding on March 30, 2023, to encourage U.S. private-sector participation in Zambian projects spanning agriculture, energy, mining, manufacturing, healthcare, digital services, tourism, education, and transportation. The MOU encourages transparent, sustainable procurement and identifies potential U.S. agency support and financing channels, but creates no funding obligation, award guarantee, or procurement commitment; commercial terms are negotiated directly between businesses and the Zambian government. Its intended five-year activity period runs to March 2028.

- Related initiatives include a **$350 million** Millennium Challenge Corporation compact for water supply, sanitation, and drainage infrastructure, USTDA project-preparation support in several sectors, and USAID activities supporting trade and investment. These are distinct programs, not funding commitments created by the MOU.
- U.S. firms can evaluate opportunities across the named sectors, while accounting for project-specific procurement terms and financing; the MOU itself does not guarantee that any project will proceed or receive U.S. support.
