# Meridian Solid Waste Advisory Commission Meeting (10.28.26)

The City of Meridian Solid Waste Advisory Commission held its regular meeting on October 28, 2026. The main discussion was a proposed mandatory, citywide curbside organics program, estimated at $6.50 per household per month based on a Republic Services quote. Staff estimated implementation could begin in 2028 and would require contracts, carts, trucks, collection capacity, and expanded compost-processing infrastructure. Commissioners supported composting as a long-term goal but raised concerns about cost effectiveness, resident buy-in (survey results indicated 77% would not support the program at the proposed price), and the long-term infrastructure plan. The commission passed a motion to forward the discussion to City Council with those concerns; it did not recommend immediate implementation of the $6.50 proposal. Staff also noted that Meridian’s current subscription yard-waste program, serving about 1,600 accounts, is expected to use City of Boise processing facilities in 2027 as a bridge while longer-term capacity is addressed, with added costs and uncertainty about the program’s future.

The commission also voted to direct staff to update its analysis of a possible additional household hazardous-waste collection location in the Chinden/Highway 16 corridor, including potential sites and financial impacts. Clean Earth currently provides the hazardous-waste service. No contract award, vendor selection, or specific spending authorization was made at the meeting. The commission reviewed the quarterly tonnage report and deferred a full-year comparison to its January meeting.
