# 🔴 LIVE: Vision Zero: Evaluating NYC's Street Safety Strategy.

The New York City Council Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure held an oversight hearing on Vision Zero street safety on October 27, 2026. The Department of Transportation (DOT) described its 10-year Vision Zero Reimagined plan, including a commitment to treat 1,000 intersections annually with daylighting or equivalent safety improvements and focus on roughly 200 priority corridors. DOT said it has resources for most of the plan, cited about 200 new staff positions in its hiring pipeline, and said it is expanding contractor capacity and equipment to increase street-safety work and improve street-light repairs. No contract awards, bids, purchasing approvals, or specific procurement dollar allocations were identified, and no votes were taken.

The Committee heard bills proposing a dangerous-driving study (Intro. 113), 100 miles of protected bike lanes annually for six years (Intro. 613), a two-year low-traffic-neighborhood pilot (Intro. 1070), and a demonstration program for intelligent speed assistance devices targeting chronic speeders (Intro. 1153), among others. DOT supported the goals of several measures, including the ISA pilot and low-traffic neighborhoods, while seeking flexibility on mandated project targets and further discussion on implementation. Members also questioned street-light repair delays, enforcement and towing capacity, and the safety oversight of regulated trucks. The hearing raised future spending and delivery needs, but did not approve funding or procurement actions.
