# Urban Forestry Commission 10-27-2026

The City of Norwalk Urban Forestry Commission meeting on October 27, 2026, reviewed fall tree-planting progress and upcoming projects. Staff reported 143 trees staked and ordered this fall, bringing the 2026 total to 308, with a year-end target of at least 350 and a goal of 400. The commission discussed planting three columnar oaks approved by the First Taxing District, with staff exploring whether they could be installed under the existing city contract. For the West Avenue median project, staff and the contractor are assessing logistics, utilities, traffic controls, and tree pricing; funding is available from Sono Collections and a U.S. Forest Service Inflation Reduction Act grant. Planting may occur this fall or move to early spring depending on coordination with other state and DPW projects. No new contract award or specific spending vote was reported.

The commission also discussed aligning future planting priorities with the city’s tree master plan and other capital projects, including roundabouts; revising a public nomination form for a legacy-tree program; and improving coordination on tree species and planting plans across city departments. Members discussed exploring American chestnut plantings in public spaces and shared feedback on community outreach. Staff will follow up on West Avenue scheduling and pricing, circulate edits to the nomination form, and check on plans for roundabouts and existing street-tree plantings.
