# Whitman Select Board - October 20, 2026 Meeting.

The Whitman Select Board meeting on October 20, 2026, addressed several purchasing, contracting, and facility-use matters. After discussing the town’s trash collection costs and indirect expenses, the Board voted 3–0–1 to retain the $435 residential fee for FY2027 rather than adopt the Public Works commissioners’ $420 recommendation. Public Works reported that negotiations with Waste Management were ongoing for a proposed 2.5-year contract extension, with final terms expected at a future meeting; the town’s costs under the proposed terms were described as rising from about $1.9 million to approximately $2.1 million over the contract period. The Board also unanimously approved an amended South Shore Recycling Cooperative intermunicipal agreement for a regional household hazardous-waste depot. Whitman’s added contribution was stated as $2,520, in addition to the existing $3,750 appropriation; the cooperative hoped to award the depot contract on November 4.

The Board approved a one-year lease of town space to the St. Vincent de Paul food pantry at $100 per month and voted to ask town counsel to begin an RFP process for a longer-term lease opportunity. The pantry expects to make interior improvements and maintain the space, while the town would handle exterior upkeep. Members also discussed—but did not decide on—future uses of vacant town buildings, including seeking demolition and sprinkler-system cost estimates and obtaining legal guidance on deed restrictions. The Hobart Dam Replacement Committee was reestablished with one Conservation Commission representative and six at-large members to examine repair, replacement, or removal options and possible grant opportunities. No other building RFP or capital project award was approved.
