# 10/20/26 Commissioners of St. Mary's County

At the October 20, 2026 meeting of the St. Mary’s County Commissioners, the board approved several funding actions. It accepted an $800,000 U.S. Department of Justice COPS grant, with no match required, to replace the Sheriff’s Office mobile command vehicle, and approved up to $200,000 in locally forfeited funds for the projected shortfall and outfitting, along with related budget amendments and authorizations. Commissioners also approved a $170,522 Maryland opioid restitution grant agreement for jail-based medication-for-opioid-use-disorder staffing. They approved transferring $97,910 in county capital-reserve funds for building energy audits as match for a previously awarded $1.07 million Maryland energy grant. The board approved a $3 million loan to the Hollywood Volunteer Rescue Squad for renovation and expansion of its facility, with a 1.66% weighted-average rate and approximately $226,000 in annual debt service. By amended motion, the loan will be disbursed as a lump sum with 5% retained until occupancy approval; the $1 million in bond proceeds must be separately held under the stated interest-rate limit and subject to documentation and county access to account records.

The commissioners adopted the amended Walter Francis Duke Airport terminal rental policy and fee schedule, effective November 1, on a divided vote; a six-month operational review was requested, and staff were asked to explore a more accessible standalone airport website. The board also approved the draft St. Mary’s 2050 Plan 4–1: it approved rural-commerce designations for Family Tree Ventures and Tommy’s Truck Service, denied several other requested land-use changes, and took no action on the Piney Point request. These land-use decisions establish planning designations but do not themselves approve development or procurements. No vendor was selected for the vehicle purchase or construction work in the actions discussed.
