# DoD Expands Munitions Production

The Department of Defense is pursuing a two-track expansion of the U.S. munitions industrial base: scaling production of established interceptors and missiles toward 2030 while aiming to field lower-cost drones and missiles on timelines as short as 18–24 months. The associated programs include the $1.1 billion Drone Dominance Program, Air Force plans for more than 27,000 Family of Affordable Mass Missiles over five years, and the Army’s Low-Cost Containerized Missiles effort, which seeks 10,000 missiles by 2030. For contractors, the potential work spans production, components, and industrial capacity, but delivery depends on appropriations, contract execution, factory and workforce expansion, supply-chain capacity, and testing.

- The Drone Dominance Program launched in December 2025 and targets 340,000 small drones by the end of 2027. Companies with scalable production capacity may find opportunities as the program expands.
- The Air Force’s FAMM plans call for 1,000 units in 2027 and more than 5,000 in 2028; Army LCCM plans include initial Barracuda-500M deliveries expected in 2027 and a 10,000-unit goal by 2030.
- Contractors should assess whether their production lines, workforce, suppliers, and testing capabilities can support accelerated delivery schedules; the source identifies these as dependencies for realizing the buildup.
