# 10/15/26 Fairfield Traffic Authority

The Fairfield Traffic Authority met on October 15, 2026, to discuss the town’s automated traffic enforcement (speed-camera) program and school-zone safety. Members generally described the cameras as effective but called for clearer public communication and more accessible program data. The chair presented nonbinding proposals to reduce fines to a flat $40, extend the appeal period, increase the speed-enforcement threshold by one mile per hour, and reinvest program revenue in safety improvements. These proposals were not voted on; some would require changes to the vendor contract, town ordinance, or state law. The presentation estimated a broader package of safety improvements at about $760,000, including flashing beacons at schools (installation estimates reached about $17,000 per site) and additional radar feedback signs. No vendor award, contract amendment, or funding allocation was approved.

The Authority voted 7–0 to request that the Office of State Traffic Administration modify the relevant traffic investigation report to authorize flashing beacons at the school-zone locations covered by the report and at previously approved speed-camera locations. Members discussed operating the beacons during reduced-speed periods and potentially for approved school events, while noting that scheduling, responsibility, maintenance, funding, and public communication still need to be worked out. The board also discussed a future proposal to seek 25 mph limits on roads in school zones where current posted limits are higher; no action was taken on that item. Raised crosswalks were suggested during public comment, but no decision followed.
