# Human Rights Commission Special Meeting of October 12, 2026

At its October 12, 2026 special meeting, the Iowa City Human Rights Commission approved a $250 funding request from Miriam Girls Club for an inclusive, accessible family event at Mercer Park on October 31. The request passed; the commission member who founded and directs the club abstained because of a conflict of interest. Commissioners also discussed and approved a statement urging voters to oppose Johnson County’s proposed $94.5 million jail bond referendum on November 3, citing concerns including limited community engagement, potential training and operating costs, deferred maintenance, and the proposed site near unmarked graves. The statement also calls for a co-design process that includes people and groups most affected by the justice system.

No jail construction contract, procurement, or bond expenditure was approved. Staff noted that, following legal advice citing Iowa Code section 68A.505, City resources cannot be used to advocate for or against a ballot issue; commissioners discussed distributing the approved statement individually and through media contacts. The commission also asked that future funding requests be brought to regular meetings when possible.
