# Parks and Recreation Commission Meeting of October 14, 2026

The City of Iowa City Parks and Recreation Commission met on October 14, 2026. The commission approved the August 12 minutes; no vote on spending or contracts is recorded. Staff presented proposed FY28 user fees and charges for commission review before they go to City Council. Most proposed fees would rise about 5%–10% (targeting roughly 7%–8%), with dollar increases for water fitness admissions and swimming lessons; some fees, including the farmers market and dog park drop-in fee, would remain unchanged. If approved, the changes would take effect May 1, 2027.

Staff also reviewed a still-evolving capital budget and project requests. Annual funding includes $80,000 for park projects and $50,000 for small improvements and repairs at the Recreation Center and City Hall; the annual contract tree-planting project was cut from the next budget year. Planned projects include $2.3 million for Senior Center interior renovations and a $225,000 Mercer Park shelter replacement, along with trail, paving, pool, and facility work scheduled across future years. Several requested projects remain unfunded or were deferred. Staff reported ongoing construction and maintenance work, including the skate park and pump track, and said a contractor had been asked to address cracking in resurfaced basketball courts. No contract awards or vendor selections were identified.
