The City of Marshalltown Planning and Zoning Commission met on October 15, 2026. No procurement or contract awards were identified. The commission recommended approval of CenturyLink’s special-use permit to expand its telecommunications facility at 3202 South 6th Street with an approximately 840-square-foot fiber-optic shelter and two 300-kW generators. The recommendation was approved with a request that staff work with the applicant before the Board of Adjustment meeting to provide information on generator noise controls and buffering. A proposed data-center zoning ordinance was tabled until October 21 for further review. Discussion included a proposed 100-foot buffer near residential property and a 600-foot separation for noise-generating equipment, potentially reducible with a noise study, but no action was taken on the ordinance or overlay map that evening.

The commission also recommended approval of Ordinance 15130, establishing mandatory connection to the public water system, with a 60-day connection period and exceptions for certain existing properties served by separate, non-interconnected water sources. The data-center discussion addressed permitted locations, water and power requirements, cooling methods, and application review procedures; these were proposed land-use requirements, not purchasing or funding decisions. The commission planned to continue review of the ordinance and overlay map on October 21.
