# Sunshine Meeting

The City of Coral Gables held a sunshine workshop on October 14, 2026, to discuss implementing the recently approved charter amendment establishing an inspector general. No action or vote was taken. Commissioners and staff discussed developing an ordinance to define when and how an inspector general could be engaged, the scope of investigations, qualifications and selection, and procedures for ending an investigation or contract. Proposals included requiring a four-fifths commission vote to refer a matter—and potentially to select or terminate an inspector general—reviewing matters case by case, and issuing an annual public report of referrals and findings.

Procurement discussion focused on whether to contract with the Miami-Dade County Inspector General or use a private provider selected through a request for qualifications (RFQ), potentially with a prequalified “wheel” or selection panel. Commissioners emphasized availability, relevant expertise, independence, and limiting costs; a commissioner suggested capping an outside provider’s rate at the County Inspector General’s rate, while staff noted that engaging the County would still require an agreement and county commission approval. The City Attorney agreed to work with the item’s sponsor on a draft ordinance and return it at a later meeting. No contract award, budget allocation, or procurement approval occurred.
