# Whitman Finance Committee April 6,2026

Whitman Finance Committee meeting on the FY2027 budget (metadata date: October 13, 2026; the meeting title says April 6, 2026). The town administrator presented a proposed balanced budget without an override or department closures. The largest proposed reduction was eliminating $235,000 for non-mandated school busing; other reductions included about $40,000 each from police and fire and $20,500 from DPW. The school budget was described as fully funded. The proposal also uses $388,000 from the OPEB liability trust fund and draws on existing trust-fund balances for some library and Council on Aging expenses. Members discussed the potential effect of the busing decision on Whitman residents and the town’s bond rating ahead of Whitman Middle School borrowing. No budget or procurement vote was taken; the committee planned to discuss the proposal with the Select Board the following evening.

The committee also discussed a proposed new financial software system, described as a need because the existing system is beyond end of life, and capital plans including the DPW TIP project and a possible future fire-truck purchase. Members noted that only about $35,323 would remain after previously approved and proposed capital articles. A roughly $250,000 snow-and-ice deficit may be partly covered by an anticipated trash-budget surplus, with the remainder addressed through transfers. These were discussions and recommendations, not new contract awards or purchasing approvals.
