# Cary Council Work Session – October 8, 2026

Cary Council work session, October 8, 2026: Staff updated council on planning for the downtown multimodal center, intended to serve expanding transit and future Bus Rapid Transit (BRT). The site’s acquisition is complete, demolition was expected to finish near the end of October, and staff plan public engagement beginning in January 2027 to develop and assess potential site uses, concepts, budgets, and partnership options. Transit-related planning and design are covered by Wake Transit funding; additional non-transit uses would require other funding or partnerships. Staff expect to return with options next year, potentially leading to an RFP or partnership process. The facility is being planned in coordination with the western BRT project, currently scheduled for 2032. No procurement award or spending vote was taken.

Staff also reported rising fleet fuel costs: bulk fuel prices had increased to $3.28 per gallon for unleaded and $4.67 for diesel, with a projected $367,000 increase if current trends continue. Staff are pursuing mitigation measures, and no budget action was requested at this meeting. Council also received an update on a new state law requiring qualifying multifamily development by right in certain commercial districts; staff are preparing guidance and public-information options. No vendor selections or contract awards were identified.
