# Army Advances Howitzer Modernization Procurement

The U.S. Army has received its first Hanwha Defense USA K9MH/XM1776 wheeled howitzer prototype and has ordered three additional Mobile Tactical Cannon-Wheeled prototypes for testing. Reports describe the prototype award differently: one cites an initial $100.3 million contract with a potential value of $262.9 million, while another cites a $233 million award; reported prototype quantities also vary. The Army is evaluating the wheeled system as a possible replacement for some M777 howitzers, while its September 30, 2026 RFI seeks information on tracked howitzers and resupply vehicles, including production lead times, capacity, and U.S. production plans. Hanwha is also planning U.S. production and an integration and testing facility in Opelika, Alabama, and says it is engaging more than 70 current and prospective suppliers.

- The wheeled prototypes will undergo testing and crew evaluation; any broader acquisition depends on Army results and subsequent decisions. The stated potential requirement to replace more than 400 artillery systems signals a possible larger market, not a confirmed order.
- The tracked-howitzer RFI creates an additional market opportunity. Companies evaluating participation should assess their ability to address the Army’s stated production-capacity, lead-time, and U.S.-production questions; no response deadline is provided in the signals.
- Hanwha’s planned U.S. production and supplier engagement may create subcontracting and domestic supply-chain opportunities, particularly for firms positioned to support production, integration, and testing in Alabama.
